Sunglasses are kind of like sneakers. They used to be cheap and widely available enough that you bought a pair if you needed them. But now, they’re a luxury item that you splurge on. And that’s precisely why they’re so expensive. But Sunglasses Price has been hiked recently and it’s showing no sign of slowing down.

Sunglasses serve a very important purpose – they protect our eyes from the harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun. But why are they so expensive? It turns out that there are many different things you can do with two pieces of glass, and these things can have a big effect on the price of sunglasses. For example, the type of lens used makes a big difference. Some lenses are made of special materials that filter out more UV rays than others. These lenses are usually more expensive. Another factor that affects the price of sunglasses is the type of frame. Some frames are made of metal or other durable materials, while others are made of cheaper plastic. The more expensive frames usually last longer and look better.

Yet, Why Do they cost too much? Don’t you think a pair of sunglasses costing $500 is too much? Like You could buy a brand new iPhone with that kinda money mate!

But First of all,

Are Sunglasses important?

According to our Must-Have Fashion Items, Of course, yes.

Iris (the colored part of the eye) is important for your vision and you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that. However, if the light is too strong, the iris can’t close enough, and the result is “photokeratitis” or “sunburn of the eye.” This is why it’s important to wear sunglasses in bright sunlight. The darker the lens, the more protection the sunglasses provide. Sunglasses provide protection from ultraviolet rays in sunlight. Ultraviolet (UV) light damages the cornea and the retina. Good glasses can eliminate UV rays completely.

These provide protection from intense light too. When the eye receives too much light, it naturally closes the iris (the colored part of the eye). However, if the light is too strong, the iris can get damaged and you might slowly lose your eyesight, also some other major problems come along too. Sunglasses help the eyes close properly. So My answer is yes, Sunglasses are important.

Why are Sunglasses Price are so expensive now?

I’ll Break it Down into 5 Main Points:

1. The quality of Items used: The price of a good pair of Sunglasses is relatively high because of the excellent lens quality, two reasons main factors. Second, the raw material of the frame is relatively expensive. For example, the type of lens can make a big difference in the price. Polarized lenses, which are great for reducing glare, can be more expensive than non-polarized lenses. And if you want a mirrored finish on your lenses, that can also add to the cost.

Then there are the frames. Some sunglasses are made with expensive materials like titanium, while others are made with cheaper plastic. And of course, designer sunglasses can be quite a bit more expensive than your average pair.

2. The quality of coatings: Many sunglasses are quite expensive because of the coatings they use. For example, the coatings on polarized lenses are super expensive. Also, the coatings on sunglasses are important because they protect your eyes from harmful sun damage. What’s more, the coatings give a nice sheen, making You look beautiful.

3. The glass: It’s the Main Thing, right? They are glasses out of everything. But Not Like regular glass on your window or water glass, Sunglasses are famous in the fashion circle. They are not simple like ordinary glasses. They can make someone’s face become more elegant, give people a very attractive image, and make them more beautiful. Sunglasses are more and more popular now, and in fashion circles, they are more and more luxurious. So for most luxury brands, Sunglasses are luxury glasses and Luxury goods are expensive in this universe. Like a Trip to the space or a luxury Gucci Handbag, you got my point?

4. Shipping: It’s not like you don’t already know this. You don’t want your sunglasses broken or bent, do you? Because of the materials used to make them, as well as the complexity of their shape, sunglasses are large in weight and fragile and need to be shipped in oversized boxes and padded envelopes. Shipping these fragile items is costly because of the need for an oversized box, the proper padding of the box, and the cost of shipping via UPS or FedEx.

5. A Secret Company: After reading about all these points I’ve made, are you still convinced to pay that premium price? Like, Don’t Our iPhones got more expensive parts inside them? If Not, Then We both are on the same page and yes, there is a dirty(or you can call it business practice) Secret Behind the Sky High price of a pair of Sunglasses. So I started digging, and it’s in the public domain. Not Like I had to break into The Vatican volt or had to hack into Nasa’s website to find out more details about the monopoly game, search this on Google and you can find more data about this.

Luxottica – The Monopoly Gamer on Sunglasses

Oliver Peoples, Persol, Ralph Lauren, Ray-Ban, Adidas, Burberry, Chanel, Coach, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Ralph Lauren, Tiffany, Versace, and Vogue. If You ever heard of any of those brands, they all make sunglasses from the same company. In other words, if you want to buy a pair of nice sunglasses, you have to give your money to the same company. It’s not just that they have a lot of brands. They also have a lot of stores where you would buy sunglasses. They own or operate 7,000 stores in the U.S. including LensCrafters, Sunglass Hut, and Pearle Vision. And they’re not just selling their own products in those stores. They also have agreements with other stores to be the exclusive seller of their sunglasses.

Yes, a secret company(Not so secret though, that is a public limited company) named Luxottica makes the world’s most high-end sunglasses. It’s like the China of glasses, They Made them all, change the design a bit here and there, change the logo and send it either to Ray-Ban or Gucci.

How Big is Luxottica to control sunglasses price?

Bigger than Apple I’d say, in this industry. Luxottica is an Italian company that owns not only the biggest sunglasses brands in the world (Ray-Ban, Oakley, Oliver Peoples, Persol) but also the biggest eyeglass brands (LensCrafters, Sunglass Hut, Pearle Vision, Target Optical). In other words, if you want to buy a pair of sunglasses, there’s a very good chance you’re going to be giving your money to them.

The Luxottica Group, which also owns popular brands such as Oakley, has just acquired Essilor, the second-largest spectacle and contact lens maker in the world. The merger between Essilor and Luxottica was one of the largest deals in history. The new company’s name is EssilorLuxottica. The merger has created a company that will supply 15% of the world’s population with glasses, and it’s expected to expand even more in the coming years. Luxottica also owns the USA’s second-largest vision insurance company, EyeMed Vision Care too.
